Kumu Hula Araceli Mailelauli’i Delgado was born in Mexico City, and was introduced to Polynesian culture at the age of three through a "School for International Dances" in Mexico. She was also a ballet dancer for 14 years.
At the age of 18, Maile met Hulali Velasquez, a hula instructor and former choreographer for Maunaloa, the only Hawaiian restaurant in Mexico. Hulali trained Maile for various hula competitions in Mexico, and in 1992 Mailelauli'i represented Mexico at Ia 'Oe E Ka Lä Hula Competition in Hayward, CA. She was invited to return the following year. She has won several Hula Competitions in Mexico, City. She established Ka Malu ‘o Ka Mailelauli’i, A Hula Halau for instructors in that city, which shares a unique program of training by understanding in a deeper way the Hawaiian Language so that poetry and Chants are better understood.
In 1994 she joins "Na Mele Hula ‘Ohana", under the direction of Kumu Hula, Mark Keali’i Ho’omalu. She participated in numerous Competitions in California and Hawai’i. Maile studied Hawaiian Language under the teachings of Loke Roseguo, in ‘Aiea, Hawai’i and at Chabot College in Hayward, Ca. Maile has toured around USA as a Solo dancer for prestigious Hawaiian Band, Ka ‘Ehu Kai and she has composed "mele" songs that are interpreted by these singers.
Maile has been instructing Hula for 18 years in Mexico and in California. In 2003 Maile was honored with an Invitation to teach at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, non profit organization in Oakland, CA directed by Kumu Ho’omalu.
Mailelauli'i has taken hula to heart and has attended various hula workshops with different Kumu Hula in Hawai'i, Indianapolis, Orlando, Phoenix, San Francisco & San Jose, CA and Mexico.
Today Maile, has started to build a dream of a Lifetime, a Hawaiian Dance and Art School called HA’AWI, which means "to share."
HA’AWI is established in 2004. Also stands for the motto << Hula Art, Around the World Inspiration>> "Sharing hula through out the World" Since Maile believes Hula is a form of life, knowledge that you are invited to share and that welcomes all that are touched with this Art to be inspired about life and living in any country and from any cultural background.
Hula is not only a technical dance, it involves dedication, discipline, knowledge of Hawaiian language, history and mythology, the understanding of various arts like lei making, implement and custom creation; Also the participation in several Polynesian events throughout the year. These and more activities are part of Hula knowledge. Therefore if you have a genuine interest to take your first hula step, set your mind open to a new adventure, Hula is something that will never leave your heart, pili i ka poli.
About the Program: Maile has created a Program that focuses in understanding the origins of Hula through Hawaiian Mythology to better interpret the Poetry and Chants of the Hawaiian people. She teaches all ages, from young 3 year old to 99+, whoever is called to dance, she invites them all! "My main motivation is to inspire my students to understand the origin of hula and to be able to see it as a source of communication, to find hula not only as a dance but as an inspiration for life," says Maile. "Being able to inspire young and old to seek hula as a way to grow at all levels, striving for the best and to make an effort to give to others the best of you." Her beautiful program for Children gives the kids a good perspective to grow as individuals. The songs, stories and games that take place during the class along with passing on the language through basic Hula steps give them an opportunity to visualize an Ancient Culture that today has found a Renaissance, and touches its roots beyond, calling for a Cultural Evolution.
Maile as everyone calls her has achieved many goals along her career. HA’AWI is the result of an answered prayer, a place to share what Maile loves! Hula
E Hula Kakou a pau loa! E Hula puni ka Honua! Let’s all dance forever and dance around the world will be! |
